Agate is another name for banded Chalcedony, a cryptocrystalline member of the Quartz family. It is usually commonly cut into thin slices and dyed different colours to shows the distinctive bands more clearly. It is found filling rock cavities as a secondary mineral which has been deposited by silica-rich water and is often formed in metamorphic zones and also in sediments.

Historically, the wearing of agate was said to bring God's favour and make one agreeable and persuasive, giving victory and strength to the wearer and protection from danger. It works slowly and steadily to bring strength and build self-confidence and improve one’s general well-being. It is thought to overcome feelings of anger, bitterness and negativity.

Amethyst is a member of the Quartz mineral family and is commonly found lining hollow cavities in volcanic rocks. Its hardness means that it is often left behind when other minerals weather away and this also makes it ideal for jewellery and displays. Amethyst changes colour with heat and its colour may fade if left in direct sunlight for prolonged periods. Its name comes from the Greek words for ‘not drunken’ as they believed it would prevent intoxication.

Asteroid Jasper, a member of the Orbicular Jasper family, is a microcrystalline variety of Quartz. The word Jasper derived from the Greek for ‘spotted stone’ and occurs worldwide.
